Flagging

Trees and bushes at high elevations, subject to constant strong winds, are subject to flagging. They're not "bent" by the wind per se, but new growth on the side of the plant facing the wind is often broken off or damaged by ice crystals. Thus, the plant tends to grow in a direction away from the prevailing wind.
