Along the way to the summit, you get to see the beautiful, twisted, metamorphic rocks that make up the subsurface of these highest mountains. Tremendous force and pressure "bent" and transformed the original sedimentary layers, while intrusions of molten material along cracks and weak spots formed the pockets and bands of quartz and other minerals that are woven in. Cedar Rock Mountain and Looking Glass Rock - two mountains easily visible from here - have smoother, more rounded rocks formed by giant intrusions of magma that cooled beneath the earth's surface, and were then later exposed by erosion.
