General Information

Drivers along Interstate 40 west of Asheville, just before the border with Tennessee, encounter what is known as "The Gorge". This section of road snakes its way alongside the Pigeon River, which has cut deep between the Great Smoky Mountains to the southwest and the Bald Mountains to the Northeast. Towering cliffs and mountains that soar more than 4000' above the road create an impressive backdrop for the winding highway. A highlight and high point of the Bald Mountains, Max Patch Mountain is considered by some to be the "crown jewel of the Appalachian Trail", and it lies at the upper end of an area of Forest Service lands known as Harmon Den, which is accessible off a little-known exit on this stretch of I-40.

The Harmon Den area is well-known, however, by horseback riders, and this is a popular area for equestrians. However, miles of hiking trails exist in the area as well, and all horse trails are open to hikers. Max Patch Mountain is by far the most popular destination for hiking in the immediate area. 360-degree views await at the top of the bald mountain, with views into the Smokies, toward Mount Pisgah, and all the way to areas like Mount Mitchell to the East. The Appalachian Trail runs along the spine of the mountains and the state line, providing more opportunity for hiking. A couple of off-trail waterfalls top off the list of attractions in the area.
