View From Luther Rock Overlook

The view East from the Luther Rock overlook. In the middle of the photo is the high, broad Ashe plateau looking toward the Blue Ridge Escarpment. The plateau abuts the Blue Ridge and continues to the north (left in this photo). The New River, considered by some to be the world's oldest river, gathers on this plateau and flows north and west to end up in the Gulf of Mexico, as do rains that fall on Mount Jefferson. Rain that falls beyond the green trees in the upper left of the photo goes to the Atlantic Ocean.
