The Mountains to Sea Trail comes down from the trail shelter (upper left, see the previous photo) and turns left here to go down the steps. If you went straight instead (behind where the photo was taken), you'd reach the Craggy Gardens Visitor Center in a few yards. The MST continues below the visitor center and eventually connects with the Douglas Falls trail, and then the Blue Ridge Parkway, making it possible to hike from the visitor center to Douglas Falls on a portion of the MST.
