The Mountains to Sea Trail is a trail that, once completed, will stretch from Clingman's Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Jockey's Ridge on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This 900 mile long trail follows sections of footpaths connected using roads and popular bicycle routes in the middle of the state. The Mountains contain the most miles of completed trail, with only a few sections left to build. Much of the remaining trail construction has been become mired in logistical problems, environmental review and red tape, unfortunately.
Within the mountains, the trail follows the Blue Ridge Parkway closely for much of its length. Many segments of trail make for great day hikes. Two suggestions are Rattlesnake Lodge and Potato Knob Fields, both moderate hikes just north of Asheville on the Blue Ridge Parkway. More information is coming soon!
