Large Hemlocks near Douglas Falls
As you approach Douglas Falls, you enter a virgin, old-growth forest of enormous hemlock trees. Unfortunately, these are all dead now thanks to Hemlock Wooly Adelgid infestation - even though the predator beetles that were supposed to eat the pest were released in the area. From recent aerial photos, it looks like a few hemlocks much higher up the ridge might still be alive - maybe the beetles went up that way. I haven't been up there to explore.
