Now that the hemlocks are mostly dead, it's apparent that more small to medium-sized Red Spruce trees grow at a lower elevation than I once thought. There are probably 1-2 per acre on average across much of Fork River Ridge and its neighbors. Will these one day tower into the canopy even at these lowly elevations?
