Seedling on a Nurse Log in Joyce Kilmer

A tiny seedling grows on a huge, decaying nurse log beside the Joyce Kilmer Loop trail. Sometimes, these sprouts get big enough to reach their roots down into the soil below the log. When the log finally rots away, the tree is left standing on its roots like stilts. Birch trees are notorious for this.
