Deep Dark Forest

The Appalachian Trail, on its way to Round Bald, passes through this section of relatively healthy spruce-fir forest. Once, all the highest peaks above 5000' or so in the southern Appalachians were covered with forests like this (except they had larger trees). Logging, fires, grazing, and more recently acid rain and the Balsam Wooly Adelgid have virtually eliminated these cool, moist high-elevation forests. Enjoy it while you're here!
