This is one of the only natural ponds in the entire region, excluding beaver dams. It's an unexpected find in the fire-barren environment atop Shortoff Mountain. Thousands of tiny frogs were hopping around in the moss and mud around the edge of the pond on this day in May 2017, illustrating in living color the importance of wetlands in the ecological balance.
