Description

Starts with a beautiful climb up Ferguson Peak from Hickorynut Gap on US Hwy 74-A, then proceeds through Strawberry Gap and up to Blue Ridge Pastures. Passes through a series of switchbacks on a newly-built, well-constructed trail with steps and other trail structures. Note that there are several connections with private trails; stay only on the well-marked Strawberry Gap trail.

The forest is a mostly typical mid-elevation type rich with understory plants. Carolina Hemlock grow on bluffs near the summit, and even a couple of Red Spruce can be found mixed in. The forest floor is carpeted with galax and ferns.

Connects with the Trombatore Trail in Blue Ridge Pastures, providing connections all the way up to Bearwallow Mountain, down Wildcat Rock to Florence Preserve, and beyond. Will serve as part of the eventual much-longer Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail.

This trail is located in the Hickory Nut Gorge area. For a list of all the trails in that area, see the Hickory Nut Gorge trails list page.
